Splinter
After my last post I was kind of confused about Splint's involvement with Neurocam.
So I did a small amount of investigating.
Splint itself is a set of tools invented by artist Jason Maling. The tools don't work in any specific way, their purpose is to be "played" with. I'm no artist but I imagine the way that the individual uses the tools in meant to be interesting.
Robin Hely's film "Who is Robert Henley?" shows two clips of Maling. The first features Robert Henley wearing something like a welding mask and playing with Splint. Maling said "You couldn't tell if he would respond one way or another. He was always one of those people, is one of those people who, you know, is an enigma, is a bit of a mystery." That was said on Thursday 7th May, 2001.
2 months earlier though, Robert Henley stole Malings Splint equipment. "He's nicked the gear. The gear is used in other contexts with other people. I would hope that he respects that."
I guess Maling got it back though.
Iocus Severus told Lady J "Both Jason Maling and Peter Burke seem genuinely bewildered by the Neurocam phenomenon." ... "Maling, though somewhat wary of all things Neurocam appears to welcome the attention it has brought 'Splint'. I confess to resorting to an underhanded act in an attempt to draw him out on his possible involvement with Neurocam. He complied with my wishes to an extent but appeared very sincere in his disavowal of any relationship with Neurocam. He claims to be at a loss as to why Robert Henley at first, engaged with Splint himself and then subsequently, directed operatives to do so. I was and continue to be inclined to believe him."
Maling's name is also mentioned on that "fabrication" website, "Who Is Robert Henley?" That stuff doesn't make much sense to me. Fabrication is an appealing answer. But a 3rd page on this site is slightly more convincing, even if I don't know what it means. I think it's Henley stealing Maling's Splint gear.
Maling also said regarding Neurocam, "its a small and more tangled universe than you are probably aware." ... "seek and you will find" ... "I genuinely have a very peripheral and disengaged past and current relationship with the monster that is the Cam" ... "What I can tell you is that assignments are the key and the greater the commitment the greater the understanding. In some ways the Cam is anything you'd like it to be."
Hey wow, investigating is fun! But what the crap have I learnt? I still don't know why Splint was and then wasn't included on the Nautonier organisation chart. But I can always make it up. Maybe it happened like this. Henley was interested in Splint and how it deals with perception of reality and the mind and so on. He sought to incorperate Splint into his organisation. Maling perhaps turned him down. From what I've seen of Henley he seems quite unpredictable and likes to be control. Maybe he stole Maling's shit out of spite.
I say shit in the nicest possible way. I'm sure Splint is awesome.
